Julie Chrisley’s Heartbreaking Health Battle Revealed After Prison Release
After being released early via a presidential pardon, “Chrisley Knows Best” star Julie Chrisley claims her health severely declined due to environmental conditions at her correctional facility.
Nearly two months since her release from prison, 52-year-old Julie Chrisley is opening up about her health struggles. Speaking on the July 30 episode of the Chrisley Confessions podcast, she alleged that her time served at the Federal Medical Center (FMC) in Lexington, Kentucky, has left her with lasting respiratory issues.
Allegations of Asbestos Exposure in Prison
Julie stated that she developed a lingering lung condition during her 28-month incarceration. She attributed the illness to breathing in asbestos—a toxic mineral often found in older building materials.
“I have lung disease from being in the morgue… from being in the prison,” Julie explained. She noted that fans might have already noticed her physical struggle: “You’ll probably notice me at certain times trying to catch my breath.”

However, her husband, Todd Chrisley, clarified that while they are taking the matter seriously, Julie has not yet received a formal medical diagnosis. He shared that she has an upcoming appointment with a pulmonary specialist to investigate further. “That’s something we have to deal with right now,” Todd emphasized.
Response from Authorities
In response to allegations regarding the safety and sanitary conditions of their facilities, the Bureau of Prisons issued a statement to US Weekly. While not addressing Julie by name, the bureau maintained that its mission is to operate “safe, secure, and humane” facilities.
“We take seriously our duty to protect those entrusted to our care, as well as maintain the safety of correctional staff and the community. Humane treatment of the incarcerated population is a top priority,” the statement read. As of now, FMC Lexington has not provided a specific response to her claims.
A Stark Transformation After Freedom
The Chrisleys, who were originally convicted of tax evasion and fraud, were released early following a pardon from President Donald Trump. Since returning home to their four children, the couple has been vocal about how prison life changed them—not just physically, but mentally.

Todd Chrisley admitted it was a “hard moment” seeing his wife’s natural brown hair grow in, noting he had never seen her look so “somber” in his life. Julie admitted she embraced a “rough” look while incarcerated: “I told my friends, ‘I don’t care. I’m just going to let it grow until I get home.’”
While Julie has since restored her signature blonde hair, the battle for her health and the lingering effects of her 28 months behind bars remain a primary focus for the reality TV family.
